Thinking of a PS3!

Okay, I'm sucummbing to getting a console. It'll be my first ever console as up until now I've only ever played PC games.

I'm thinking of the PS3 for a number of reasons. Advanced graphics, SD card reader (on 60GB models), Removable hard drive, free online gaming, Blu-Ray DVD player and photo and MP3 storage.

I won't be getting a Wii because I really dislike Nintendo style 'cartoony-cutesy' games and the graphics engine is poor. I really love the idea of the Wiimote and nunchucks but can't stand the games.

I won't get an XBox 360 because I'd have to pay for online gaming. Anyone any thoughts on why I should get the 360? At the moment the PS3 is my choice but I am open to persuasion.

Well, when it comes to online play, you're paying for quality. The new service microsoft is opening up (old game downloads over live for gamerpoints, such as the original halo, fable, pyschonauts) really shows why Xbox Live is worth it, imho. 60 sheets a year, and it was worth every cent. However, for some reason the 360 demands a higher connection speed then the original black brick, so I haven't experienced live play in a while (cept at the Live centre on SWS). If anything, it's cleaned up. Less kids, less mic shouting, less n00bs tbh.

Well I have an "8MB connection" but in reality it's only about 4.5-4.9Mb download speed and 700Kbs upload, is that fast enough?

Well accorsing to microsoft, eircom, and the rest of the paper pushers, 2MB should be enough. Doubtless if you have that, and there's still an issue, some hidden problem will be found, and you'll be to blame, so no need to worry

Xbox Live Centre uses about that too, and I've rarely had lag, so fire away with that.

(On a random sidenote, whatever I have, around 1.8MB, is fine for lagless wireless DS play, so huzzah)

You should reconsider the Xbox360 - online gaming, as a total experience, is superb and well worth the extra few bob. There are free alternatives too, if you want to use your Xbox360 online - fox example XBConnect - Xbox | Xbox 360 | XBC360 | Internet Gaming Evolved

Aye, I renewed my subscription to Live, and well, nothing but improvements.

The new Friends list is completely updated, with many new options, abilities, etc. Pretty awesome.
Marketplace, well, its good if you have 1.The time to download and 2.The space foe downloads, but free game demos of this quality is always good.
And shockingly, Ive yet to be called a 'fag' by a 10 year old American, so I think the new 'Sumbit Player Review' and 'File Complaint' options are working a charm.

Thanks for all the advice, I eventually opted for a 60GB PS3 and am really happy with it. Opened it up on Christmas day and played it every day since then.

I haven't watched any Blu-Ray movies yet but I have watched plenty of DVD's and used the upscaling function. I won't be getting a Blu-Ray remote because it looks like you can do everything you need to with the Sixaxis wireless controller

I've also messed about with photos and slideshows but mostly I've played games. We got Resistance: Fall of Man and Heavenly Sword with the PS3. I've completed RFOM and am about half way through HS.

Overall I'm delighted with the purchase and will be buying and playing Call of Duty 4 real soon
