40-42" As Secondary Monitor/TV

How do.

I currently have a 32 lcd that I use as a secondary monitor and TV in the living room. I'm thinking about getting a larger display, probably 42" but possibly 40", to replace it. Now, I use the TV mainly for watching movies off the PC, some gaming, and general TV use. My current TV is only HD Ready and it's max resolution from PC connection is 1366x768.

I'm just wondering if it's worth getting a Full HD TV. I'd like to connect the PC up via DVI->HDMI as opposed to VGA which I am currently using. To be honest, I don't have HD television, nor do I intend on getting it soon. I don't watch any HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies either, mainly DVDs. The main thing I am concerned about is having good resolutions for playing games from the PC on the telly.

So what I'm wondering is, as stated above, is it worth getting a Full HD TV, or staying with HD Ready? If I connect via DVI->HDMI will the resolutions be improved over VGA? Whats the story with 1080i vs 1080p, 780i vs 780p? All that jazz?

The TVs I've been looking at are along the lines of:

Well it depends on how much you want to spend

Most small monitors are technically full HD when used with a PC, only difference in your case it that if you were going full HD, the screen size would be bigger.

Personally speaking I try to look for fullHD res when going anything above 32", mainly because of the case of using it with a PC.

Even if you dont use HD-DVDs etc, you can view FullHD material through your PC to the monitor (ie HD tv shows from the US)

Ala the gaming: More res means you will see more

As for the 'i' and the 'p'

I stands for interlaced and P stands for Progressive

Wikipedia has a lovely article about both

Interlace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Progressive scan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How bout this TV. Have been looking at it for a while but can't mak up my mind. Contrast ratio is only 6000:1 (how much of a difference does that make?), but it has gotten a good review:

I4U News - Toshiba Regza 42X3000P 42 inch HD Ready 1080p TV Review

Either that or a this 40" Samsung. 15000:1 contrast ratio, and DVB-T tuner.

I really wouldn't want to be spending more than 1300 ero, max.

cheers,
Karl.

6000:1 on that Toshiba is dynamic, which means that its not true, however the true CR is more than likely 1000:1
Its still good.

I'm a fan of samsungs and can never fault them. A DVB-T tuner is a plus, but there is no real need for it in Ireland as most of the services are provided by a set-top box and will be in the future.

I figured that about the DVB tuner.

So out of those 2 I linked above, what would the smarter choice be? For a difference in price of less than a hundred euro, a contrast ratio of 15000:1 as opposed to 6000:1, though sacrificing 2" in screen size, would the Samsug be a better choice? Or is the Toshiba good value?

Your help is much appreciated by the way.

cheers,
Karl.

Ah too late! Went ahead and ordered the toshiba. Saw a few similar models in action and they seem good. Plus any reviews of it have been very good.

cheers for your input,
Karl.
