Know of any good...but cheap...TV brands?

I was just going to post a question asking about good...but cheap...brands! I've just bought my first house so myself and the lovely Mrs r3nu4l are going to splash out and get a new TV and use our current 14" 12 year old TV for the kitchen.

I won't be able to afford a whole home-cinema set-up for quite a while but I need a TV that accepts digital signals but doesn't necessarily have to be HD ready. I would also like good connections, ideally to eventually connect surround sound and sub-woofer but for now the ideal would be to have speakers that don't reverberate and buzz during the battle of Helms Deep when Gimili blows the Deeping Horn (no puns please ).

So can anyone recommend a brand costing about £300 ~ €450? (I live in the UK).

Anything cheap in that region that should be decent is any phillips CRT's or even the Mitsubishi black diamond range.

I know phillips had a 28" widescreen tv on offer quite a while ago that had spring clips for surround sound.

I had a search on argos.co.uk and came up with this phillips tv

I dont think it's a DTT but I'd say you could get a good freeview box somewhere that would also accept the top-up tv cams for extra channels. (If you want them of course)

I swear by Beko. It all started 8 years ago, I had just bought a house with a friend and we wanted a big tv. Beko had a 28" 4:3 tv for IR£299, so we bought it.

Last March I passed that TV on to a friend and bought myself a 32" Beko widescreen for €329, the PRF brought it over the €10 an inch bracket. It has 2xScart (1 RGB) and 1xCompsite inputs.

I find the picture good, Stereo sound is fine also. I suppose you get what you pay for, size wise, well you need a deep corner to put it in, but apart from that, it loos grand.

Beko can be got in Powercity.

I had an Orion 28" TV for about 3 years. It still works no problem. As a matter of fact the actual tube I believe is a samsung or phillips one, the later I think.

Thanks for the suggestions guys...was out shopping today and managed to convince my good lady to step inside an electrical shop. Glad I did

When Mrs. r3nu4l saw some of the more expensive TV's in the flesh (so to speak) as opposed to a picture on a website, she was very impressed. As a result we may be increasing our budget How cool is that? Looks like I was wrong, internet shopping is not the only way to shop, sometimes a physical real-life showroom is a good thing...mind you I'll most likely still be buying onlline

I'll get back when we've a few more options but it could be a few weeks, lots to do since we bought the house. New TV may drop down the list of priorities...

True, there are other priorities! It's amazing as well when you look at a tv in a showroom how much you can get convinced to get it. Most people usually go just to have a look and to make their mind up. I know that's how I done it and funny enough, the model I got looked small in the showroom, but massive enough in the room at home.

On the subject of cheap telly's, I managed to pick up a 32" HD lcd for €399 in Tesco over the Christmas. The make of it is Technosonic and at that price I could not leave it there. I have now retired my Dell 26" lcd from the conservatory up to the bedroom where I plan on mounting it to the wall and replacing it with this 32"

As I have not even opened up the box yet, I am eager to see how it compares to the 32" Samsung lcd I paid over €900 for only 2 month back.

Is this the one? Technosonic LCD3251 32" HD LCD TV Direct link may not work.

In the UK this TV is £399.97 from Tesco Direct so if it's the same model you did really well!

I see it's currently out of stock in the UK! Have you tested it yet? Any good?

Mirai!!! I got a tv from xtra-vision , 32" - HD Ready tv - beautiful. Anyway, when i got it for 900 - i thought i was getting a bargain. They brought the price down to 650. You really cant go wrong. I give the tv 10/10 although i do find it a small bit slow when switching between sources but thats just me. anyway, check out xtra-vision for the tv, it really is the biz
